Junior Graphic Designer

As a member of the Creative Services team, the Jr. Graphic Designer will use the Adobe Creative Suite and creative techniques to design a wide range of innovative digital and/or printed content for layout, advertising design, marketing materials and promotional materials for the weekly newsprint publication, the Syracuse New Times, monthly glossy magazine, Family Times and various quarterly trade publications in accordance with defined brand standards. The Jr. Graphic Designer will also design advertisements for the web and aid in maintenance of the websites and social media for the organization.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Website Maintenance
    • Upload new and old issues of publications to website platform using WordPress
    • Adjust art and layout from the print design to look as compelling in a digital format
  • Layout Design
    • Use design skills to conceptualize and design visually striking covers for all publications that will reach thousands of readers, both locally and nationally.
    • Lay out directories and classified content in an organized and precise manner.
    • Create visually interesting editorial layout and designs for stories within all publications.
  • Advertising Design
    • Create advertising for local and national clients.
    • Process and prepare provided ads to printer specifications.
    • Assist with social media or marketing efforts to boost publication and client visibility across various mediums.
    • Create promotional materials, such as flyers and programs, and perform other in-house design tasks.

Qualifications:

  • Associates degree in graphic design, communications, or related field required.
  • Link to portfolio or digital files of work samples required.
  • Previous experience in WordPress desirable.
  • Macintosh OS experience desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Computer proficiency including the Adobe creative suite to create graphics and layouts. Ability to use Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Basic understanding of website maintenance and coding (HTML, CSS).
  • Strong advertising design skills.
  • Ability to clearly and concisely communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to create and produce graphic materials using a range of media, methods, techniques, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of graphic layout and photographic requirements and procedures.
  • Ability to analyze graphic and technical information and create interpretive illustrations.
  • Ability to adhere to print and digital media specifications.
  • Ability to resolve difficult or stressful client issues.
  • Some analytical ability to gather and summarize data, find solutions to various administrative problems, and prioritize work.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills to interact with co-workers, clients, and vendors in a professional and helpful manner.
  • Strong organizational skills including the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Must be detail-oriented and well organized.
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines, so a flexible schedule is required.
  • Team player.

Outside Sales Representative, Syracuse New Times Family Times Magazine

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Display Ad Sales – calling on potential advertisers to secure sales in the display ad sections of the Syracuse New Times and Family Times publications and other special sections, communicate with and maintain existing relationships with current advertisers, follow up in a timely fashion on sales leads, develop new leads and cold call potential new customers, assist the Accounts Receivable Dept. with collections of outstanding payables, participate in marketing efforts using Social Media/Website resources
  • Ad Order Entry – work with the Creative Services department to develop effective ads for customers, create spec ads as needed, and ensure quality and timeliness of advertising development and placement
  • Promotions – represent the company at certain events in the community (including after working hours)

Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree required, Bachelor’s Degree in marketing or related field preferred
  • Good social skills, works easily with people both in person and on the phone
  • Works well with a team
  • Ability to use our Pre1 web-based software to manage an account base
  • Good time and territory management skills
  • Computer/Internet/Social Media skills
  • Self-motivated, works well under pressure
  • Drivers License and clean driving record

Blogger/Vlogger, Syracuse New Times

The Syracuse New Times is looking for bloggers and vloggers to contribute to our website.  Bloggers may write about topics that typically have to do with Syracuse or its surrounding area, however, this is not required. If the topic is suitable for the New Times, it will be also be considered. Some topics to consider are stories on local businesses, people and events. Broader topics can include, but are not limited to, covering pop culture, television, movies and more.

Vloggers may put together video packages ranging from roughly two to eight minutes in length. The topics that can be covered for these videos are similar to blog posts, though vlogs tend to be more local-oriented.

Blog Requirements:

  • Access to own computer
  • Writing experience and knowledge of AP style is preferred
  • Must present at least three examples of writing to be considered
  • Knowledge of Syracuse and the surrounding area is a plus

Vlog Requirements:

  • Access to own camera, computer and editing software
  • Experience in editing and camera work is preferred
  • Must link or send examples of video work to be considered
  • Knowledge of Syracuse and the surrounding area is a plus

Editorial Intern

The Syracuse New Times regularly invites Editorial Interns to join our close-knit staff. The outlet has a focus on community journalism and seeks an intern with a passion for storytelling and exploring all things hyper-local.

The intern should be prepared to come to the office with a critical and creative mind, ready to tell the stories often missed in the daily-news drudge. Assignments could include such things as covering live music shows, the outcome of a big sports match, local politics, profiling new retailers or other community news assignments.

Interns will be presented with complimentary SNT-brand attire from Spinnaker Custom Products at the beginning of their employment, and will receive a monetary gift certificate at the completion of the internship.

Responsibilities:

  • Produce one to two stories per week for our print publication
  • Complete assigned stories and pitch own ideas in a timely fashion
  • Be a company brand ambassador when out in the field
  • Assist in the weekly story planning process
  • Assist in managing and compiling the online events calendar

Requirements:

  • Junior or senior college student studying journalism or public communications; or have demonstrated equivalent journalism reporting experience
  • Can work remotely if needed; up for discussion

This is an unpaid, for-credit internship but could lead to paid freelance/part-time/full-time opportunities.
