Zion I and The Grouch at The Westcott - Tonight, April 19

.
. . . . . .
The West Coast hip-hop trio Zion I and The Grouch is coming to the Westcott tonight, April 19, and bringing their mixed instrumentation and socially conscious lyrics with them. Currently on their “Healing of the Nation” tour, at each stop the group is donating a portion of the proceeds from ticket sales to a local community organization. While here, proceeds will benefit the Zen Center of Syracuse.

While on the road, The Grouch answered a few questions about what inspires him to inspire others and what show-goers can expect at the concert tonight.

Who or what inspired you to get involved in music?

Grew up in Oakland {Calif.}, hip-hop was fresh and new, cutting edge. I used to sleep next to my radio just trying to absorb new music. There was no Internet to just look it up at any time. Parents used to be like, “Turn it off,” but the messages were so real to me. It just built a hunger inside. When it was time to tell my story I naturally wanted to do it in a rap.

You’re well-known for your positive and socially conscious lyrics. Tell me about the writing process behind them and what inspires you to write the lyrics that you do.

I want everything I write to mean something to someone. When people tell me my music helped them in some way it feels good. There's a time and place for mindless music I guess, but I’d rather let someone else make that.

You’ve worked with some great artists like Aesop Rock and Aceyalone. What was it like working with them?

Working with other artists always adds to the depth of a project if you pick the right ones. I like to work with artists I respect, get along with and whose styles make sense for the particular collaboration, not just someone who’s hot to boost sales. All of my experiences so far have been great.

You’re on a tour right now that’s benefiting local community organizations at every stop. How did you come up with this idea?

We wanted to give back to some folks in need, in addition to just our music. Local organizations seemed like a logical step.

A portion of your proceeds while you’re at the Westcott will go to the Zen Center of Syracuse. How and why did you choose that organization?

We had a few people gathering info on organizations across the country. We went over the lists and picked the organizations we felt most drawn to.

What can the crowd expect at the Westcott show on April 19?

Lot's of energy, good vibes, dope beats and lyrics!

Openers for Zion I and The Grouch include One Be Lo, The Shotgun Wedding Quintet and Rhyme Therapy. Doors open at 7, show is at 8 p.m.
