Instant Karmin

YouTube rapper delights Amy Heidemann and Nick Noonan kick off the Chevy Court calendar

By Jessica Novak
Amy Heidemann of Karmin has got a primped and perfect pin-up look with bright red lips and a neatly kept suicide roll atop her brunette head at nearly all times. She says Nick Noonan, her duo partner on stage and in life (the two are engaged), has got a “dapper” look to match. The two met while attending Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music where Heidemann was studying a mixture of vocal performance and music business and Noonan was paving the way to become a jazz trombonist.

Lucky 13

moe. and more deliver at moe.down 13

By Neil Benjamin Jr.
There’s something incredibly liberating about putting the final tent stake in the ground when setting up your site at a campout music festival. Yesterday you may have been in an office for eight hours, busting hump to finish your assignments. But today is different. Today you get to crack open a beer, sit around with your friends and get ready to dance endlessly until your body tells you it’s time for some rest.

LOCAL HOP

By Jessica Novak
He’s got a natural knack for words that’s hard to come by. Beyond that, he’s got a brutally convincing voice and guitar that matches his lyrics in just the way a singer-songwriter can make it. Every inch of every song is crafted to Adem’s specifications and it works out beautifully.

But the NPR affiliate based at Syracuse University didn’t have to look far to replace the local blues legend. It welcomed Tom Corbett, former host of the station’s Friday Night Blues program, on Aug. 5.

Shake, Rattle and Roll

Alabama Shakes delivers modern rock with a classic feel to a full audience at Paper Mill Island

By Jessica Novak
They’re raw, real and pack a punch. They’re mismatched and unlikely looking rock stars, but somehow it makes them fit the bill better. They’re unconcerned with fashion and caught in a time warp, channeling an old-soul Southern vibe with the ghost of Janis Joplin throwing in her raspy wail through the pipes of lead singer/rhythm guitarist Brittany Howard. Alabama Shakes is a breath of fresh air--a young band with old roots that betray the members’ baby-faces. They are saving rock’n’roll one passionate, non-stop, full-force show at a time--and thank God the masses are picking up on the healthy trend.

Jazz in the City

By Jessica Novak
The Black Lites softly jammed in the background during the July 12 press conference for the 2012 edition of the Jazz in the City concert series. The announcement, held at the offices of the insurance company Pomco on Eastwood’s James Street (Pomco has been a series sponsor for six years), offered good news for the band, who will be playing at one of this summer’s shows.
