Accentuate The Positive

When the date Sept. 11, 2001, or 9/11 are spoken about, it’s rare that something positive comes to mind. Sadness and anger tend to come before hope and unity. But the Syracuse-based interfaith group Women Transcending Boundaries (WTB) is working to change that. For the 10th anniversary of the tragedy that saw the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers fall, WTB is trying to transform the day into something positive that can provide motivation for people in bettering their communities and their world.

Jolted in Jersey

I was 14 and a freshman in high school on Sept. 11, 2001. I remember first hearing about some planes and some buildings when a friend from childhood and classmate, Kevin Campbell, came blowing into German class with the news. Frau Newcomer didn’t understand what he was saying and neither did the rest of us as we all sat at our desks at a loss for words. We all remained quietly confused until the superintendent came on the loudspeaker and clarified what was happening.

The reality hit quickly and swiftly following the announcement in a way severely different than elsewhere in the country.

Growing up about 60 miles outside New York City in a small New Jersey town, it was inevitable that the loss of certain victims would hit directly home. It did, profoundly.
