Reading the unreadable

You can hear the question all over town: Just how to you read James Joyce’s Finnegan’s Wake? It’s got a reputation for being unreadable.

And who knew there were seven answers? Robert Baines will discuss those strategies at 5:30 p.m. March 12 in the Reilly Room, in Reilly Hall, at Le Moyne College. The lecture is free and open to the public. For information, call 445-4555.

Baines is a visiting professor at Le Moyne. He has studied at Oxford University and Trinity College, in Dublin, and is working on a monograph about Joyce. 14

Reading the Readable

A book that will never be confused with one written by Joyce – The Cat in the Hat – will be read 11 a.m. March 9 at the Barnes & Noble store at 3454 Erie Blvd. E., DeWitt.

The event is part of the Read Across America series. And the Cat will make an appearance.

Reading the unreadable

The literary representation of Holocaust memories will be the topic of a presentation by Susanna Piontek and Guy Stern 5:30 p.m. March 6 in the Peter Graham Scholarly Commons of Bird Library, at Syracuse University.

The program will be a reading interwoven with conversations about the couple’s work. It will address issues of transltion and fictionalization of memories.

“It will mark the culmination of the couple’s visit to campus,” said Karina von Tippelskirch, assistant professor of German and coordinator of the German language program at the university.

The event is free and open to the public. For information, contact von Tippelskirch at 443-5383 or kvontipp@syr.edu. —Larry Dietrich
