Joey DeFrancesco proved to eager ears why he’s considered the best Hammond B3 player on the planet on Dec. 14 at Onondaga Community College’s Storer Auditorium. Joined by drummer Jeremy Thomas and guitarist Paul Bollenback, the trio took the sellout audience through a collection of standards and favorites, such as DeFrancesco’s interpretations of holiday themes like “Silent Night.” The B3 king also impressed with his trumpet skills and he even got behind the drum kit when he and Thomas switched spots for an entertaining change of pace. DeFrancesco further inspired students from area high schools with a master class held earlier that day. The latest success of OCC’s continuing Legends of Jazz concert program led to much boisterous cheer for series organizer and gregarious emcee Frank Malfitano (above).
