Blues-soul queen Ruthie Foster has won awards left, right and sideways for her distinct vocals and moving music. On Saturday, Dec. 8, she’ll bring those powerful pipes to the Center for the Arts of Homer, 72 S. Main St., Homer, for an 8 p.m. show during her extensive world tour. Foster was brought up in rural Texas, with her musical beginnings rooted in church choir. After a tour of duty with the U.S. Navy Band and a soured New York City label deal, Foster made her way back to the sound city of Austin, where she became a regular nominee at the Austin Music Awards. She won Best Folk Artist in 2004-2005 and Best Female Vocalist in 2007-2008. She’s been nominated for Grammy Awards, won Blues Music Association awards, and has a voice that’s been compared to greats like Aretha Franklin and Ella Fitzgerald. She’s collaborated on stage and recordings with artists including Warren Haynes, Big Head Todd, Bonnie Raitt, Eric Bibb and others and regularly hits festivals including the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, the Monterey Blues Festival, Merlefest and the Kate Wolf Festival in Northern California.
