Aside from Christmas, Halloween has to be Central New York’s second favorite holiday. Haunted houses range from gentle to grisly, and they’re all over the map. Proven favorites include the annual Fright Nights at the Fair at the New York State Fairgrounds (Friday, Oct. 26, and Saturday, Oct. 27, 7 p.m. to midnight, and Sunday, Oct. 28, 7 to 11 p.m.; admission is $20; visit frightnightsatthefair.com), while newbies feature the Alliance Bank Stadium’s Carnevil of Chiefsville; Thursday, Oct. 25, through Saturday, 6 to 11 p.m.; admission is $10; call 474-7833). Another haunted house perennial is the Cortland Youth Bureau’s annual Chiller event, scaring the 607 area code for 30 years at the Burch Building in Cortland’s Suggett Park, Homer Avenue and Madison Street (Friday and Saturday, 7 to 10 p.m.; $1 for adults, kids under 12 are free; call (607) 753-3021). Another longtime tradition is The Great Zoo Boo at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park (Friday and Saturday, 6 to 8:30 p.m.; gate admission is $8; call 435-8511), geared for kids who don’t want to get too scared, although you never know what costumes the critters will be wearing.
