One Day, Two Races

.
. . . . . .

In the middle of marathon race season come two shorter events, Sunday, Sept. 30, one with a whole lot on the line and the other just for fun.

Syracuse Festival of Races

Men’s 5K, 8:50 a.m. Women’s 5K, 9:50 a.m.

3K Fun & Fitness Run, 10:45 a.m.

Community Walk, 10:50 a.m.

Manley Field House, 1301 E. Colvin St.

The 5K runs are highly competitive events with some of the fastest runners in the nation descending on Syracuse for a chance to race the traditionally speedy course. The 3K is designed for less competitive runners or parents to join with their children in a shorter distance.

The Syracuse Festival, headed by race director Dave Oja, celebrates 20 years this year.

Fees: 5Ks: $35/race day; 3K: $15; Community Walk: $15.

Escape from Fright Nights

2.5-mile fun run, 5:30 p.m.

Fright Nights at the Fair, Beef Cattle Barn, State Fairgrounds, 581 State Fair Blvd.

The event starts outside the building, where zombies, goblins and creatures will chase runners around the perimeter of the Fairgrounds. The race finishes with participants running through the actual Fright Nights exhibit. While there is nothing too scary, this event is still recommended for ages 9 and older. Don’t worry about your time; instead, worry about being scared senseless.

Fee: $30.
