Steve McQueen (pictured), playing a character nicknamed “The
Cooler King,” cemented his anti-hero persona in this 1963 wartime epic
about POWs attempting to break out of their Nazi camp. Aside from
McQueen performing dangerous motorcycle stunts, the all-star cast
includes
James Garner,
Richard Attenborough,
Charles Bronson,
James Coburn and many more. A 35mm screening will be held at Eastwood’s
Palace Theatre,
2384 James St., on Sunday, July 22, 8:30 p.m., as a fundraiser for area
film projectionist Mike Ahern, whose Cicero home was destroyed during a
July 11 fire that also killed the family’s dog Riley. Admission is $10,
and cash donations and gift certificates for the family are also
welcome. For information, call 436-4723.
