MICHAEL DAVIS PHOTO

The annual ceremonial burning of the American flags takes place in Veterans Memorial Watchfire Park at the State Fairgrounds’ parking lot between Route 690, 695 and State Fair Boulevard. The watchfire comes from the military tradition that, following a battle or long march, a large fire would be started so those missing or lost could locate and rejoin their comrades. The watchfire also provides the community with the opportunity to respectfully and properly retire unserviceable American flags. Attendees are encouraged to bring tattered, worn or faded American flags for respectful burning on the pyre. Admission and parking are free, and the event begins at dusk (approximately 8 p.m.). For more information, call 468-5898 or visit cnyvva103.org/watchfire.html.
