Two teen phenoms were the drawing cards during the April 5 opening day for the Syracuse Chiefs’ 2012-2013 season, which started much the same way as previous opening days in this neck of the woods, with stiff winds and chilly temperatures greeting the Chiefs’ frigid faithful. Ch-ch-changes included the gaping hole where the former scoreboard once stood (a new model is on the way) and lots of varied vendors on the Alliance Bank Stadium concourse courtesy of new-kid-on-the-block Ovations Food Services. While the first game ended with Thruway rival Rochester Red Wings coming out on top, 7-4, the opening day boasted plenty of other visual attractions (clockwise from above left): 17-year-old Cicero-North Syracuse High School senior Breanna Stewart throws out the ceremonial first pitch; Red Wings outfielder Rene Tosoni attempts to slide under the nose of Chiefs first baseman Tyler Moore; Chiefs fans huddle during their blanket response to the nippy afternoon; designated hitter Brian Dinkelman bubbles with excitement; and 19-year-old Chiefs centerfielder-slugger Bryce Harper, who demonstrated that not only does he enjoy getting on base, he likes stealing them even more.
