The Pride of Solvay

.
. . . . . .

Sure it’s Murderers’ Row, the vaunted 1927 New York Yankees, but what’s even cooler than spying Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, wearing personalized jerseys among the barnstormers, is the fact that this photo was shot across West Genesee Street from The New Times offices. Star Park, as West Enders knew it, saw all sorts of baseball royalty. Local player and business owner Al Grabowski of Albert’s Jewelers stands next to The Iron Horse himself. You can see the actual photograph at Twin Trees, 1100 Avery Ave., Solvay. Owner Don Ross says he has no idea where the photo came from or how long it has hung inside the barroom. “A lot of Sacred Heart people and folks from Solvay can point out local players they recognize,” he notes. Thanks to Ross for lending us the photo.
