Religious Leaders

.
. . . . . .

Diversity is the key here, with such noteworthy men and women of the cloth as (clockwise from right) Monsignor Joseph Champlin, the people’s priest; Betty Bone Schiess, a Syracusan who was the first female ordained in the Episcopal church; and one of three with the name Larry, the Rev. Ellis, photographed on his Prayer Patrol in 2003.

Beyond noteworthy, it’s impressive that Iroquois spiritual leaders live on the Onondaga Nation, including (clockwise from top left): faithkeeper Oren Lyons and tadadaho Sid Hill; then there is the retired Bill Coop, who never met a activist social cause he didn’t embrace; the Rev. Larry Briggs, from 1986 (the third Larry, Howard, is on the cover); finally, in 1991, His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet, who trekked to Cornell University in Ithaca.
