Syracuse International Film Festival : Son

.
. . . . . .

During the filming of a performance-artist piece, a boy
(James Wilson) and his lighting designer mom (Nathalie Press) seem to
be stalked through the tunnels by the video’s mysterious director
(Glenn Doherty). At least that’s what it appears to be happening, since
Son is taken from the kid’s wide-eyed perspective, as he absorbs
and plays back every upsetting image he sees. Mulloy’s script has more
movement than dialogue, although he does strive for metaphors; the
video concerns mimes and their exacting physical behavior, much like
the mirror sequence from the Marx Brothers’ Duck Soup, and that
could be a clue to these mind games. Mulloy’s exercise in audience
manipulation is aided by Robbie Ryan’s moody photography, George
Tomlinson’s sinister production design and young Wilson’s haunting
performance. Gifford, Saturday, May 3, 9:15 p.m.; Delavan, Sunday, May 4, 2:30 p.m.
