The Women's Room

.
. . . . . .

Creekside, 35 Fennell St., is the new home of Laura’s List, devised by Ponticello. Each month she comes up with a theme and features different books with which she hopes to, using her mantra, “Inspire, Ignite and Empower” women.

She has joined forces with the bookstore and every month her featured books are displayed in the front and the rest of the women’s books are placed in the new women’s section of the bookstore. Erika Davis, owner of the Creekside Books & Coffee, has been pleasantly surprised at the response of Laura’s List and the women’s section. “Laura has been the catalyst starting the women’s section,” Davis says. “Women are our best customers and I think they deserve to be catered to.”

The women’s section is designed to stand apart from the rest of the bookstore. A bookshelf with inspiring books for mind, body and soul stands against the wall opposite huge windows that look out onto the quiet street. It’s a calming place for women who want some quiet time to sit and relax. But it is also set up for women who want to come in quickly, get what they need and leave.

Ponticello is known for her skilled book reviews that appear on the Web site, www.curledup.com. She also is a freelance writer who has been published in business journals and newspapers, including the Skaneateles Journal.

“It’s a whole separate atmosphere for women to just come together, talk, be inspired, pull a read and it really hits everything for mind, body and spirit,” Ponticello says. Some examples of past choices from Laura’s List are Left to Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust by Immaculee Ilibagiza, French Women Don’t Get Fat by Mireille Guiliano, and Crazy Aunt Purl’s Drunk, Divorced and Covered in Cat Hair: The True-Life Misadventures of a 30-Something Who Learned to Knit After He Split by Laurie Perry. All of Ponticello’s choices provide something women can relate to or find comfort in no matter their situation.

“It’s showing books, highlighting books that really speak to the core of a woman that say I can do it no matter where I am in life,” Ponticello explains. Using the “Inspire, Ignite and Empower” motto, she finds books each month to fall under each action word; the books in the women’s section are categorized under those titles as well.

Creekside Books & Coffee is open Mondays to Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sundays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit the store’s Web site, www.creeksidebooks.com, to view Laura’s List for the month.
