Gem Diner

(Local Flavor) The Gem offers a true diner menu and experience.

Proprietor Doug Lalone took over this Syracuse landmark three years ago and toughed out the city to keep the original aluminum trolley car looking just as a diner should. On Friday, July 18th he will debut his fourth dining room- the patio. This enclosed space will bring his seating capacity to 170 and is available for parties and other catered events. The celebration of the new space will coincide with their Nationals Party, sponsored by Budweiser. Doug expects a huge crowd for the event- fans of the cars and of his restaurant.

Koto at Destiny has a hit with new menu options

(Local Flavor) Menu selections are extensive

Located in the food court next to the carousel, Koto/Destiny was my destination on a weekday night with friends Ed and Merry. While a birthday party was enjoying the hibachi table, we settled into a regular table and set out to try some of the new items that had recently been added to the menu. Well, actually we tried just about all of them; what fun! In the beverage section, Koto is now offering flights of Japanese beer or sake; three tastes each. We opened with the Mussel Moto Yaki; 6 mussels topped with a spicy aioli and accented with roe. The dish held just the right amount of complexity. Next were the Dinosaur Eggs; five fried oysters surrounded by a sweet chili sauce contrasted with a hot wasabi sauce. Speaking of sauces, catering manager Carmen Chan told us that sauce is what sets Koto apart from the other hibachi restaurants in our area, particularly their seafood and ginger sauces that are served with the hibachi meals.

Ichiban still providing its gold standard

(Local Flavor) Ichiban Japanese Steakhouse

Ichiban Japanese Steakhouse is a Liverpool institution, and those who crowded the restaurant on a recent Monday night while we were there like it that way – the way it has always been.

Tapper’s Delight

LOCAL FLAVOR: Ask what brews are available at J. Ryan’s Pub, and the answer will take a while

In a piece a few years back about J. Ryan’s Pub, 253 E. Water St., I wrote that this place was all about the beer. Well, it’s still all about the beer.

Middle Eastern fare rules at King David’s two restaurants

(Editor’s note: Local Flavor is a feature produced in cooperation with advertisers in the Syracuse New Times.) This was one of those assignments where I was going to a restaurant that I had been to many times before. In fact, when I introduced myself, my husband and my daughter to owner Nader Hatem, he remarked how he thought we looked familiar.
