September 12, 2014 – March 16, 2015 at OH Museum This exhibit will focus on the history and influence of Italian culture on our community.  This begins with the very name given to this village in 1825, when John Wilkinson was inspired by a poem about Siracusa, Sicily.  Later, there was an Italian influence in our architecture, and by the 1880’s, an increasing number of Italian immigrants began to arrive to help with the construction of various infrastructures and buildings. …

OHA History Book Club meets on Saturday, September 20 from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm at OHA, 321 Montgomery St., Syracuse, NY  13202 to discuss the book George Eastman by Elizabeth Brayer.  The club is FREE and open to the public.  OHA’s regular hours are Wednesday to Friday, 10am-4pm, Saturday and Sunday, 11am-4pm. The Onondaga Arsenal: Reflections on the War of 1812 in Memory and Loss

In 1812, the State of New York finished a stone building along the Seneca Turnpike in Onondaga County, just in time for America’s second war with Britain.  The Onondaga Arsenal was an active military storehouse throughout that war.  After the war, the arsenal fell into disuse.  Its slow decay is documented in dozens of photographs and paintings.  Today, this building is largely invisible despite some attempts by the community to preserve it through the years.  OHA Curator of History, Dennis…
