WCNY, Central New York’s public broadcasting company, will host its annual Towpath Tales and Travel event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 10 at WCNY’s Broadcast and Education Center located at 415 W. Fayette St. in Syracuse.
Attendees will learn about Central New York’s canal sites with representatives from museums, trail and recreational organizations. Hands-on activities and information will introduce facilities in the region.
Participating canal sites at the event include Camillus Erie Canal Park and Sims Store Museum, Canastota Canal Town Museum, Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum, the Erie Canal Museum, H. Lee White Maritime Museum, and the Seneca Museum of Waterways and Industry.
Dorothy Stacy, author of a children’s series of canal books, shares canal tales at 11 a.m. Author Richard Reisem discusses the contributions of Myron Holley, Superintendent of Construction of the Erie Canal and founder of the anti-slavery Liberty Party at 1:30 p.m.
Books by both authors will be available for sale and signing.
In conjunction with this free event, WCNY will broadcast its award-winning canal documentary, “Dream Destinations: New York’s Contemporary Canals” at 7 p.m. May 11 on WCNY and at 8 p.m. May 12 on World. WCNY will also begin airing a series of canal vignettes that weekend.
