Paper becomes more through the manipulation of a poet, artist, typographer, painter, graphic designer—each a facet of the Paper Manipulator.
Miranda Whitman, a local professional graphic designer, was recently recognized for her terrarium tryptic and paper sculpture “Faux Forest” and chosen as the People’s Choice in the SUNY Oswego On My Own Time gallery show. Subsequently, “Faux Forest” will be on display at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse this coming October.
Paper Manipulator, her current gallery show, runs the month of July at Zink in Oswego. It features hand-lettered inspirational quotes and fiercely patriotic posters juxtaposed alongside delicate cut-paper sculptures of flora and fauna. A love of words naturally follows into a love of letters and a love of paper leads to the salvaging of beautiful printed things. A brush stroke here and carefully placed cut there brings to life the paper in her hands.
