All-Star Sumo (Photos)

Athleticism on display

A sumo seven league of nations descended on Turning Stone Resort and Casino for a round-robin All-Star sumo wrestling event on Saturday, July 19. Contestants from Japan, Mongolia, Russia, Poland, New Zealand, Egypt and the U.S. competed to win an All-Star title. Syracuse New Times photographer Michael Davis captured the action.

The Dr. E.M. Mills Rose Garden is located in Thornden Park near the campus of Syracuse University. Established in 1922, the garden contains plants from the original garden and has about 29 classes of roses in about 368 different varieties. Roughly 3, 850 plants surround the central gazebo. Syracuse Rose Society members work in the Mills Garden Wednesday mornings from spring through fall. (Syracuse Rose Society)

Thousands of Central New Yorkers come out during racing season, weather permitting, to watch the competition on local paved and dirt tracks. The tracks represented on these pages are Brewerton Speedway, Oswego Speedway and Utica-Rome Speedway.
